I Have Leukemia (AML)

As I’m writing this, I’m receiving a blood transfusion and will soon be getting platelets. It’s been a very difficult few weeks since being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

AML is a type of leukemia that most often affects older adults. However, after years of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments, my bone marrow is no longer able to make the blood cells and platelets my body needs. That’s why I require transfusions like the ones I’m receiving today.

The outlook is not great. Because I also have stage 4 triple-negative breast cancer, I am not a candidate for a stem cell transplant or bone marrow transplant. The stronger chemotherapy typically used to treat AML is not an option for me. Instead, I began a different treatment this week that I will remain on indefinitely. My treatment consists of seven days of chemotherapy injections followed by twenty-one days off, along with four chemotherapy pills every day.

Another challenge is that treating the leukemia means I cannot currently receive treatment for my triple-negative breast cancer. Thankfully, my scans remain stable right now. However, my blood counts continue to stay very low, and I often need blood and platelet transfusions, like I do today.

I would deeply appreciate your prayers. I am trusting in the Lord, and He is sustaining me through this. Even with that faith, there are still moments when it feels scary.

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and support.

—Melissa

Melissa, you were the first person at Memorial that treated me as a friend and showed what real love/friendship should be. After you left, it took a long time for me to find a friend. Not all children show that type of innocence, friendship, and compassion. I wanted you to know how much that truly made an impact on my life. Even as a very young child, I understood. And looking back almost 40 years, I can honestly say that your friendship as a child molded me into the way I look at people today. You may not remember, but I do. Swinging on the swing set during recess and your kindness even back then shaped who I am today. My prayers are with you, and I pray for a recovery. I pray for peace. I can’t thank the child Melissa enough for showing me something that so many decades later I hold onto dearly. We haven’t spoken or seen each other in so many years, but please know that your friendship even as short as it was has to this day made a huge impression on me. You didn’t have to reach out to that weird little girl, but you did, and I couldn’t go scrolling by without telling you the impact that you have always had on my life. Since Facebook, I have watched your journey. Your strength, love for humanity, and kindness even after all these years touches my soul. I pray that you continue to find the courage to do what you do daily. You are truly an inspiration. If you ever want to swing on that swing set again and talk or text my cell is 409-678-3080. Your swing set friend, Nicole
